The best beaches around.....

Tropea is a superb beach town in Calabria, Italy. Canonical view of peninsula with a castle can be seen from the coast, while high cliffs host the picturesque old buildings. So the Old Town is fine, but the beach is even better, - perhaps the best one in Europe. The sand is white and soft, while the water is perfectly clear, - just like in the Maldives. There is a rental of sunbeds, as well as free areas. The place becomes overcrowded in August, so it is better to choose July or September.

This beach ranks #1 of the "Best beaches in Europe"

With over 800 kilometers of some of the most naturally beautiful coastline in Europe, it will come as know surprise to hear that Calabria boasts of many award-winning Blue Star beaches and many are all within a thirty-minute drive from the apartment. The beautiful sandy beaches are mainly a very light sandy colour and in sharp contrast with the aquamarine sea, they combine in making it look more like the Caribbean than those of the typically European beaches.

With over 320 days of sunshine per year and temperatures rarely dropping below 20c/69f in the Autumn and Spring and rising to some of the hottest temperatures that Europe has to offer which is the very reason why it produces some of the finest tomatoes, red onions and extra virgin olive oil in the world.

The beautiful sandy beaches of Capo Vaticano are all worth visiting, Grotticelle and Santa Maria are only a 15-minute drive. A beach shower is available on the beach plus sun beds and parasols are for hire and there are beach bars /restaurants all serving food and drinks at reasonably low prices.

If you head out a little further towards Tropea, you may wish to visit the beaches of Santa Domenica, Ricadi and Riaci and of course the "jewel in the crown" being Tropea. Another fabulous beach is about 5km from Tropea which is called Zambrone.

All our local west coastline is on the Tyrranean/ Mediterranean but if you drive about 50km overland to the east coast, you will be on the Ionian sea. From the apartment, you can see the Aeolian group of islands Islands, the most famous being the volcanic island of Stromboli and on a clear day, you can see smoke billowing from its peak. Also on a clear day from our balcony, you will see Mount Etna, although quite a distance away, you can sometimes see its snow-capped peak or even the sight smoke erupting.

There are lots more beaches, by going south towards the ancient market town of Nicotera and then on towards the fabulous city of Reggio de Calabria which although is a wonderfully vibrant city, it's also a beach resort on the straits of Messina which is directly opposite the beautiful island of Sicily (30 minute ferry crossing from Villa San Giovanni)...Highly recommended!!!

The beach resort of Scilla is another fabulous town to visit.

Relax & Enjoy!!!
